Brief Description
The Laboratory of Reclamation Works and Water Resources Management was founded in 1962 with Royal Decree No. 132 "On the establishment of laboratories at the National Technical University of Athens" (Government Gazette, Series A, No. 32/22-02-1962) under the name "Laboratory of Agricultural Technology". It was renamed in 1996 with Ministerial Decision No. B1/73 (Government Gazette, Series B, No. 83/09-02-1996). According to the Ministerial Decision, the Laboratory serves teaching and research needs in the following fields: Design of Irrigation and Drainage Works, Design of River Regulation Works/ Flood Protection Works, Application of Modern Technologies for the Rational Management of Water Resources, Investigation of the linkage between Water Resource Systems and the Environment.
Education
The Laboratory of Reclamation Works and Water Resources Management participates in the undergraduate curriculum of School of Rural, Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering (SRSE) at NTUA with four (4) core courses: Fluid Mechanics (5th semester), Engineering Hydrology (6th semester), Applied Hydraulics (6th semester), Hydraulic Works (7th semester) and eight (8) elective stream courses: Groundwater Hydrology (8th semester), Environmental Technology (9th semester), Reclamation Works (8th semester), Open channels and hydraulic structures (8th semester), Geoinformatics Applications in Water Resources Systems (9th semester), Watercourse Rectification (9th semester), Water Resources Management (9th semester), Operational Research (8th semester). Members of the Laboratory also contribute to NTUA's postgraduate programs: “Water Resources Science and Technology” and “Environment and Development” with three (3) courses: Water Resources Management, Water Environment & Development and Advanced Water Resources Management
Research
The members of the Laboratory of Reclamation Works and Water Resources Management are actively involved in the international scientific community through: publications in international scientific journals, participation in and contributions to scientific conferences, involvement in European and Greek research projects, evaluation of research proposals, and peer review of scientific articles. In addition, Laboratory members contribute to international and national scientific and professional committees in the field of water resources, engage in collaborations and joint activities with foreign universities, and participate in the organization of Greek and international scientific conferences and events.
The Laboratory’s Research Areas include, among others:
-- Hydrological Research of surface and groundwater bodies, including: flow measurements, level recordings, development and evaluation of models, development of statistical methods for processing meteorological and hydrological data, groundwater modeling, modeling of organic and inorganic pollutants in soil, etc.
-- Water Resources Management, including: characterization of groundwater, standardization of action programs, multi-criteria evaluation of management plans and programs, implementation of strategic actions in line with the Water Framework Directive (WFD).
-- Water Quality Assessment for human consumption and irrigation use, including: water sample collection and preparation, analytical determination of quality parameters, water quality monitoring, statistical data processing, hydrogeochemical analysis, spatial analysis of quality parameters, investigation of water-sediment-soil interactions, distinction of natural and anthropogenic factors affecting water quality.
-- Soil/Sediment Quality Assessment, including: determination of soil/sediment properties, sampling of dissolved solids, granulometric analysis, measurement of hydraulic conductivity, development of soil moisture retention curves, interpretation of spatial distribution of elemental concentrations, determination of pH, electrical conductivity, calcium carbonate demand, and concentrations of major and trace elements.
Research and Design of natural wastewater treatment systems and pollution mitigation systems addressing soil and water contamination from agrochemicals.
