The need for spatial measurement to support a wide range of activities led to the introduction of Surveying courses from the very beginning of the operation of the Polytechnic, with Frederick Zentner and Theodoros Komninos serving as the first instructors. Since 1863, a distinct surveying specialization, known as Chorometry (Land Measurement), has existed within the NTUA. The School was established by Royal Decree in 1917 under the name “Higher School of Surveying Engineering”, with a three-year program of study. The School’s first graduate was Konstantinos Dendrinos in 1920, while Sofia Zarafidou became its first female graduate in 1924.
The historical circumstances of the second decade of the twentieth century created an urgent need for land administration and the development of major infrastructure projects in Greece. In response to these developments, the School was renamed the “Higher School of Rural and Surveying Engineering” in 1930, and the duration of studies was extended to four years. The principal visionary behind the establishment and early development of the School was Professor Dimitrios Lampadarios, member of the Athens Academy and Rector of NTUA (1928–1933). He remained the School’s sole faculty member until the late 1940s and served as its Dean for many years until his death in 1950. With foresight and determination, amid profound social and political transformations in Greece and internationally, he established a School dedicated to educating engineers capable of supporting the management and development of rural areas. The original School building, constructed between 1965 and 1970 in the Zografou Campus, was later named in his honor.
In the mid-1960s, Professor Georgios Veis founded the School’s Dionysos Satellite Center, with the objective of developing it into a comprehensive geophysical observatory.
In 1974, the School was restructured into its present-day form, offering a five-year programme of study. This transformation was largely driven by Professor Georgios Veis, who played a pivotal role in shaping the School’s academic and institutional evolution. In 2001, the newer northwestern building of the School complex in the Zografou Campus, completed in 1999, was named after him in recognition of his lasting contribution.
Following a comprehensive proposal submitted by the School, the NTUA Senate decided in July 2020 to rename it the “School of Rural, Surveying and Geoinformatics Engineering” (Government Gazette 2348B'/3-6-2021), ensuring that its title fully reflects the contemporary scope of its academic and scientific disciplines.
Since 2018, the Diploma in Rural and Surveying Engineering has been officially recognized as an Integrated Master’s Degree, a unified and uninterrupted programme of study leading directly to a Master’s-level qualification.
